子母鞭杆由山东德州镖师“钻天鹞子”雷振威创编,雷振威在山西洪洞保镖期间传于洪洞县西门胜兴社武术馆的武师赵乾坤,赵乾坤传“铁腿”师洪胜,师洪胜传“长臂猿猴”焦登榜,焦登榜传程永泉和田源,后子母鞭杆逐渐发扬光大。该套路共分前三十六手、后三十六手,共十二路;其中前六路单手鞭为主,后六路以换手鞭为主。该鞭法以切劈断腕为主,动作舒展大方、结构严谨,是田源系洪洞通背拳的代表性套路。
