有唐一代不仅文化十分繁荣,而且士人的思想也非常活跃,交游颇广,征奇记异,其行为多不拘于礼法。唐代士子的这种生活态度,在一定程度上促进了文学创作的繁荣,除了吟诗作赋之外,小说创作也达到了一个高潮,尤其是在贞元以来,涌现了一大批作者,其中不乏文名籍籍者,如元稹、白行简、陈鸿、李绅等。《李娃传》有一段文字,可以生动地反映交游对于唐人小说创作的始因情况:贞元中,予与陇西公佐话妇人之搡烈之品格,因遂述汧国之事。公佐拊掌竦听,命予为传。乃握管濡翰,疏而存之。
