(I) INTRODUCTION In the soil mechanics literature, the stability of slopes and dams may receive more attention than any other topic. In the past nine years, in addition to several special meetings on the stability of slopes, six monographs have been published (Chowdhurry, 1978; Veder, 1981; Zaruba & Mencl, 1982; Huang, 1983; Brunsden & Prior, 1984; and Brombade, 1986). Associate Professor Frydman of the Israeli Institute of Technology discussed the latest work on this topic in the group’s theme report for this conference.
