This chapter briefly introduces the history and current status of the use of American herbal medicines and the background of the establishment of the American Codex Committee on Herbs. It also highlights the reasons and examples of the use of planar chromatography (ie, modern high-performance thin-layer chromatography) in the control of herbal medicines in the United States.
