一提及1927年8月1日南昌起义,人们自然而然会想起参加起义的铁血男儿。其实,当时起义军中除了男兵,还活跃着一支女兵队伍。其中大部分是武汉中央军事政治学校学员(黄埔军校第六期学员),少数是廖仲恺夫人何香凝创办的妇女训练班的学员,共有30人,这些女学员可以算是人民军队的第一批女兵了。汪精卫叛变革命后,不少女学员便跟随叶挺、贺龙的部队来到南昌,参加了著名的南昌起义。有关她们的故事一直鲜为人知。
