从1995年开始,铁道部决定分步骤在繁忙的铁路干线上提高旅客列车的营运速度,使其达到140-160km/h,货物列车也相应提高速度。对此,电务部门面临严峻挑战,特别是内锁闭道岔转辙设备,已无法适应提速的要求。为此,1995年12月,全路第一组提速道岔在沪宁线南京站上道成功,五年来,上海局共上提速道岔951组。
