  Portraying the Chinese Internet
China Financial Weekly Issue No. 18, 2018
What is the development direction of the Internet in China? Decision-makers, research advisors, and practitioners have their own perspectives and judgments. Liaowang Institute and China Financial Weekly recently used the artificial intelligence technology of the Xinhua News Agency to analyze views of 300 people from the government and academia in the past year.
The statistical cycle of these public comments is from July 2017 to August 2018, covering 324 public speeches, signed articles, and interviews.
After the first round of processing, analysts selected 10 key areas with high weightage in the dataset: big data, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, security, Internet of Things, networking, intellectualization, culture, new commercial activities, and blockchain.
The second round of processing further analyzed 10 key areas using the deep learning algorithm of Internet machine learning to point to more specific issues.
On this basis, analysts manually revised the results, and sought for opinions of experts on tendency issues, summing up the following six major trends: revolutionary technological innovation generating more new business models, equal attention to network security and development, transition from the consumer Internet to the industrial Internet era, new cultural production modes, big data, artificial intelligence, and 5G commercialization driving the Internet of Things (IoT) revolution.
  The Look of Women
Xinmin Weekly Issue No. 33, 2018
Some people say that after the reform and opening-up, Chinese women become more beautiful. They can choose hairstyles at their will; the possibilities for apparel are limitless; and interest in trending products are surging. Chinese women have become quite fashion conscious.
From the changes in women’s clothes and ornaments, we can appreciate an open China.
In the past 40 years, the personal destiny of women and the progressive development of China’s women’s causes have been synchronized with the glorious era of the reform and opening-up.
China has a female population of 660 million. Since the founding of the PRC, China has made tremendous progress in safeguarding women’s rights, and has accumulated rich experience in promoting equal and harmonious development of both sexes and safeguarding women’s rights and interests. President Xi Jinping’s speech at the Global Summit of Women systematically expounded the position and viewpoint of the Chinese women’s causes. He pointed out that in the process of the Chinese people’s pursuit of a better life, every woman has the opportunity to live a brilliant life and make dreams come true. China will more actively implement the basic national policy of equality between men and women, give full play to women’s roles, and support women in realizing their worldly ideals and dreams of life. Standing at the Door of the ICU
Minsheng Weekly Issue No. 16, 2018
When it comes to the intensive care unit (ICU), many people feel terrified. It is a place where the line between life and death becomes blurred.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the discipline of critical care medicine. In the past decade, intensive care medicine has developed rapidly. The number of ICUs and practitioners nationwide has been increasing, and related expertise and skills have become more popularized. However, this discipline is also facing some social misunderstandings.
No one is willing to give up their loved ones, and no doctor is willing to give up the patient, but the ICU is not a panacea. Liu Dawei of Peking Union Medical College Hospital said frankly that medicine is often powerless. At that point, good communication with the patient’s family is of great importance.
With the extension of people’s life expectancy, the overall number of critically ill patients will increase, and the patient’s condition will become more complex.
Critical care medicine is the last line of defense to save fragile lives. Relieving the suffering of patients is also one of the important tasks of medicine. Critical care medicine will try to alleviate the suffering of the patient, but only if it is possible to let the patient survive. The complications of life in death in the ICU are matters that the entire society needs to develop an informed understanding of. It is hoped that relevant policies and laws will make this aspect more perfect.
  2003-2018: 15 Years of Taobao
Economic Weekly Issue No. 16, 2018
The Taobao Maker Festival is one of the most-watched events Alibaba holds each year, highlighting the ingenuity and originality of young Chinese inventors, designers, and product makers.
On the way to exploring new vistas, the 15-year-old Taobao seems to have never lost enthusiasm:
In the nascent stage of e-commerce, Taobao first realized that online shopping is not simply the doing of offline transactions online, but a thorough paradigm shift, which requires innovative measures. Half a year after Taobao was launched, Alipay was born, and creatively solved the trust problem in online shopping with the implementation of secure transactions, and laid down the fundamentals of the next evolution of e-commerce in one fell swoop.
Providing the first experience of online shopping for most Chinese netizens, Taobao used to be a trading platform. Today, on the commercial relationship between buyers and sellers, a community atmosphere is added. At the end of 2010, a greeting card from a Taobao shop owner caused a sensation, and netizens followed suit. The “intimate” network style was born. Nowadays,“honey” has become a greeting for many Chinese people to say hello. It reflects the blending of Taobao’s youth culture and traditional culture.
