through investigaing Lu Xun’s early modernist ideas, the article intends to reveal the startling mental state underlying these ideas. Emphasis has been laid on the analysis of the translation of A Collection of Foreign Stories: the archaic style of the translation is in sharp contrast to the modernist implication of the works chosen and the premature modernist mentality of the translators. The deliberate archaic rendering seems to be trying to find affinity between two polarities, tantamount to the attempt to create the possible from the impossible. Consequently, the result can no but be glaringly “stiff’, which precisely exposes the intense disparity between heterogeneous languages and the cultural meaning systems they involve.The collection embodies Lu Xun’s early radical endeavour for spiritual and literary experiment between the extremities of ancient simple mentality and foreign ”new expressions“.
