Friendship (Excerpt)
Emerson
在爱默生的笔下,友谊是坚固、甜美的,需要付出极大努力才能获得。朋友之间最重要的特征是坦诚相待,人与人之间最需要的是真诚。
I do not wish to treat friendships daintily, but with roughest courage. When they are real, they are not glass threads or frostwork, but the solidest thing we know. For now, after so many ages of experience, what do we know of nature, or of ourselves? Not one step has man taken toward the solution of the problem of his destiny. In one condemnation of folly stand the whole universe of men. But the sweet sincerity of joy and peace, which I draw from this alliance with my brother’s soul, is the nut itself, whereof all nature and all thought is but the husk and shell. Happy is the house that shelters a friend! It might well be built, like a festal bower or arch, to entertain him a single day. Happier, if he know the solemnity of that relation, and honor its law! He who offers himself a candidate for that covenant comes up, like an Olympian, to the great games, where the first-born of the world are the competitors. He proposes himself for contests where Time, Want, Danger, are in the lists, and he alone is victor who has truth enough in his constitution to preserve the delicacy of his beauty from the wear and tear of all these. The gifts of fortune may be present or absent, but all the speed in that contest depends on intrinsic nobleness, and the contempt of trifles.
There are two elements that go to the composition of friendship, each so sovereign that I can detect no superiority in either, no reason why either should be first named. One is Truth. A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere. Before him I may think aloud. I am arrived at last in the presence of a man so real and equal, that I may drop even those undermost garments of dissimulation, courtesy, and second thought, which men never put off, and may deal with him with the simplicity and wholeness with which one chemical atom meets another. Sincerity is the luxury allowed, like diadems and authority, only to the highest rank, that being permitted to speak truth, as having none above it to court or conform unto.

An Ideal Friend
Friends can be classified into two kinds, good d evil friends. Evil friends lead us astray and may destroy our life, while good ones drive us towards the right and make our life successful.
Two of them exist in our daily life. However, ideal friends exist in people’s mind. They should be diligent, successful and loyal. When you need help, they will stand beside you and be delighted to give you a hand. Also you can share your happiness and sorrow together.
In my opinion, friends can share something but they also should keep their own secrets. So I wish my friends wouldn’t interfere in my privacy too much. On the other hand, my friends should have something in common with me, at the same time something special. In this way we can attract each other and learn你会与朋友相处吗?
Making Friends
Everyone needs friends, and if you fail to make friends, you should examine yourself and see if there is something wrong with your personality.
May be you have social faults such as snobbishness, talkativeness and using slang etc. which drive away your new acquaintances. Whatever your social faults may be, look at them honestly and make real effort to correct them.
To be friendly you must feel friendly. Cheerfulness is the basis of friendliness. A cheerful person smiles. A smile is a magnet which draws people. Smile at someone and you are almost sure to get a smile in return.
A friendly person does his best to make a stranger feel at home, wherever he happens to be. Put yourself in the other fellow’s place and make them feel welcome.
Try to remember names. It makes your new acquaintances feel happy when you call them by their names. It gives them the feeling that they have made an impression on you and that mean something to them because you remember them.
If you don’t agree with other people on a certain matter, you should appear to be friendly. Don’t argue, but discuss. You always lose friends if you argue too much.
A friendly person thinks of others, and doesn’t insist on his own “rights”. People who refuse to consider others have few friends.
Finally, don’t treat people only according to their social positions. Really friendly people respect everyone at all times. ♥
