美国国会图书馆东方部藏有最早入库的中文书籍十种,约一千册,装成一百三十函,每函套面贴有白纸书签,上面印有英文说明:“Presented to the Government of the U.S.A.by His Majesty the Emperor of China June 1869”(1969年6月中国皇帝陛下赠送美国政府)。这批赠书越过太平洋到达美国,迄今已经一个世纪,不仅是美国国会图书馆东方文库之祖,也是美国各国图书馆中收藏最早和最大的一批东方语文书籍。可是
The eastern part of the Library of Congress is home to the first of ten Chinese books stored in about one thousand, filled with 130 letters. Each letter is printed with a white bookmark with the English description: “Presented to the Government of the USAby His Majesty the Emperor of China June 1869 ”(presented to the U.S. Government by His Majesty the Chinese Emperor in June 1969). These donations have reached the United States across the Pacific so far. For more than a century now, not only the ancestors of the Oriental Library of the Library of Congress, but also the earliest and largest collection of Oriental Chinese books in libraries in the United States. but
