在全国各地和各名胜旅游景点,时常会看到操河南镇平口音的农民,或摆摊、或开店,售卖家乡的特产——玉雕工艺品,有的标价几十万元,有的十几元,几乎都是出自镇平玉雕工匠之手。镇平地处豫西南腹地,伏牛山南麓,素有“玉雕之乡”美称。1976年该县出土新石器时代的一级文物——是用南阳独山玉制作的圭形玉铲。宋元时代,镇平民间艺人制作的玉雕产品,已畅销东南亚沿海国家。到清末民初,镇平玉雕生产和出口已形成一大产业。
