Reuters December 12, 2015 - Brazil reported 1 761 newborns with congenital cerebellar abnormalities or microcephaly, a disease caused by mosquito vectors that are endemic in Latin America. The Brazilian health authorities found in November 2015 that the mosquito-borne Zika virus is associated with congenital malformations that can lead to neonatal brain development and mental retardation and affect brain-to-muscle coordination. The WHO pointed out on December 5 that there were 1 761 cases of suspected microcephaly occurring in 422 cities in Brazil, including 19 cases of death.
