Born in Armenia and based in Russia, Sergey Babayan is the winner of several international competitions. He is currently a resident artist at the Cleveland Institute of Music in the United States. His performance has poured countless listeners around the world. At the invitation of the 2nd Beijing International Piano Arts Festival, in October 2007, he came to Beijing for the first time to bring a master class and an unforgettable concert to Beijing’s audience - he played Estonian composers Arvo Prt rt’s “Dedication to Elena,” Liszt’s “Second Narrative,” and Bach’s Gothenburg Variations. On the last day of the festival, commissioned by the Editorial Department of Piano Arts, I interviewed Mr. Babayan in the backstage lounge of the People’s Liberation Army Opera House. Somewhat different from Babajan, who I met as a translator for the festival two days ago, at the moment, he is relaxed, easygoing, and energetic. In conversation, he is quick-thinking, eloquent, abstract. Although my individual question was somewhat indefensible, it also made me understand many of his interesting but not necessarily agreeable views and opinions. Because of his experience, I have to adjust slightly to the order of expression and content of this interview.
