The figure shows a simple way of converting a 5-V logic level to the 12-volt or 15-volt level required for some CMOS devices. Q_1 is an N-channel junction field-effect transistor operating in a common-gate state. The source voltage of about 1V or 2V cuts the FET off through R_1 plus the drain voltage Vs; the source voltage near 0V Turn on the FET and reduce the drain voltage to zero volts.
