徐悲鸿早期在法国用铅笔素描临画他崇拜法国画师安格尔的著名油画《泉》。他回国后为数学需要在原素描画的基础上又画了这幅彩色碳铅笔素描,将白人浴裸女脸型、体型、肤色改为华人少女。徐悲鸿曾讲纸色素描是他的特技画法,他对西洋画进行中西结合,重视素描教学,推出《新七法》,所取得的成就得到了毛主席的肯定和称赞,这在新中国美术教育史上是第一次。徐悲鸿临《泉》素描及彩色素描遗世仅两幅,弥足珍贵。
