由美国发起,1972年成立了国际水资源协会(IWRA——International Water Resources Association)。其宗旨是:从多方面探讨世界水资源问题,促进和鼓励水资源调查、开发和管理领域中的国际合作,为规划者、管理者、行政机构、科学家、工程师、教育者及其它与水资源有关的人们提供一个国际论坛。IWRA通过她的会员、出版物和有关会议邦助指导发展中国家合理地开发利用他们的水资源。
