张纯一以佛教义理对《老子》进行的会通与诠释尤其具有特色。张纯一出耶而入佛,学贯中西,他站在佛教的立场上,以孔子、墨子、耶稣与佛教的思想会通《老子》,将《老子》置入人类文明各大系统相互比较的语境之中。“道”“有无”“无为”“自然”等是《老子》一书中最重要的范畴。张纯一运用佛教名相,对这些道家的基本范畴进行了佛学化的解读。在张纯一看来,老子、庄子、孔子、墨子虽可以与佛教相会通,然而诸家所揭橥的真理必须仰仗佛教的开发,方能达到圆满无缺和融通无滞的境界。张纯一的《老子通释》虽然采取了传统的经典注疏形式,但却体现了相当浓厚的近代学术特色。
Zhang Chunyi’s association and interpretation of “Lao Zi” with Buddhist doctrines is especially characteristic. Zhang Chunyi went out into the Buddha’s school and studied both China and the West. He stands on the position of Buddhism and talks with Confucius, Mozi and the thought of Jesus and Buddhism about “Laozi” and compares “Laozi” with the major systems of human civilization In context. “Road ” “Whether ” “Inaction ” “Nature ” is the most important category of “Lao Zi”. Zhang Chunyi, using Buddhist names, conducted a Buddhist interpretation of the basic categories of these Taoists. In Zhang Chunyi’s view, Laozi, Zhuangzi, Confucius, and Mozi can get together with Buddhism. However, the truths uncovered by various families must rely on the development of Buddhism in order to reach a prosperous and seamless state. Although Zhang Chunyi’s “Lao Tzu Tong Tong Yi” adopts the traditional form of classic annotation, it reflects rather strong modern academic features.
