Starting from the Aristotelian school, the study of metaphor has always been regarded as a marginal discipline, mainly confined to the field of poetics and rhetoric. With the rise of cognitive linguistics, metaphor has once again become the focus of research in the cognitive paradigm. Because metaphor is at the heart of human’s unique cognitive ability, it is responsible for the output, transmission and processing of meaning. Metaphor is not only seen as a rhetorical phenomenon that modifies discourse, but also as a tool to study the problem. This article mainly discusses the definition, mode and characteristics of metaphor. Metaphor is one of the most widely used and most important rhetorical devices in the rhetoric of lexical meaning. It is based on the common characteristics between two things, one thing
