According to Wikins, director of the Navy’s Marine Systems Center in Kailua, Hawaii, optical cables designed for transoceanic undersea communications can be up to three-quarters smaller than typical coaxial cables. An analysis by Wilkins in an article in Fiber Optic Communications, September 81, concluded that using optical fibers not only reduced the diameter but also reduced the size by 14/15. Wilkins studied a fiber optic cable that can be used for land to land or land to ocean shore station transmission. In both applications, the optical cable is designed to power repeaters and other loads in addition to transmitting optical data. This kind of cable has the following three characteristics in saving space.
