In order to delineate the ore / rock boundaries as closely as possible, mine planners often insist on making kriging estimates for small blocks (relative to the spacing of available sample grades). The kriging estimates for very small sections are too smooth. For several simple sampling patterns, the relationship between block size, variogram variation and Kriging estimation was studied. When the variogram’s variation is large compared to the block size and sample spacing, it makes sense to make meaningful estimates for each block. In the case that the variation of the variogram is less than half the sample spacing, it can be found that the kriging estimates of the block are irrelevant to the true taste. Overly smooth estimates should not be used to calculate recoverable reserves.
