Introduction Basal metabolism is the minimum energy metabolism necessary to maintain vital activity in normal awakening. It is usually expressed as calories per square meter of body surface area per hour. It is also called basal metabolic rate rate, BMR). It is a standard for comparison among individuals and is also one of the indices for measuring the normal energy metabolism and diagnosing certain diseases in the clinic. There are quite a few studies on people’s basic metabolism before and after liberation, but different conclusions can be drawn because of the different methods of measurement and the different numbers of people and subjects. At present, all physiology textbooks in China refer to the data published in 1943 by Wu Xiang et al. With the passage of time, changes in society and the improvement of people’s lives, whether or not the basic metabolic rate of people has changed has become a question worth exploring.
