王国维最基本的精神质素是鉴赏,而不是创造。王国维真正的才华是对已经存在的文化现象进行鉴赏,作出深刻而准确的判断,而不是创造新文化。简言之,王国维是鉴赏家,而不是创造者。王国维在现代学术史上的价值主要是作为鉴赏家的价值,他的价值到此为止,无论他在现代学术史上的地位多高,但不能超过这一界定。但是,王国维的学术理想并不仅仅是做一名鉴赏家,而是要成为一名创造者——创造纯粹学术,但他不能实现自己的这一理想。当我们反思王国维不能实现自己理想的原因时,我们发现,笼罩在这一学术巨子身上的是一种巨大的悲剧之光,这种悲剧之光在震撼我们的同时也给我们以深刻的启示。
