从贵族化到大众化再到泛化的多元化的下午茶文化三百多年前,中国茶刚刚进入英国,茶叶在英国人眼中十分神秘。1657年,商人托马斯·加威在伦敦开设的加威咖啡馆首次向公众售茶,并张贴海报宣传;1658年伦敦《政治通报》第345号刊登鼓励饮茶的广告,强调的主要是茶叶的药用价值,对于当时的英国来说,中国茶叶具有浓厚的异国情调,因为稀少而昂贵,被普遍视为是一种神奇的药物,像是传说中的包治百病的仙草。1662年,葡萄牙凯瑟琳公主将中国茶带入英国王室,并在她的引导下,饮茶很快成为英国上层社会的时尚。

In 1657 Merchant Thomas Gwewe first offered tea to the public in the Galway Café opened in London and posters were posted; in 1658, London’s Bulletin of the Press, No. 345, published an advertisement encouraging tea drinking, emphasizing mainly tea Medicinal value, for the time the United Kingdom, China tea has a strong exotic, because it is rare and expensive, is generally regarded as a magical drug, like the legendary overwhelmed immortality. In 1662, Princess Catherine of Portugal brought Chinese tea into the British royal family. Under her guidance, tea drinking quickly became a fashion in the upper class in the United Kingdom.
