On September 16, 2012, the Foreign Ministry announced that the Chinese government decided to submit to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf established by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea the continental shelf delineation beyond 200 nautical miles in parts of the East China Sea. At present, the State Oceanic Administration has already done a good job in the technical preparation for the demarcation case. Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the continental shelf of a coastal State extends to all seabed and subsoil in the seabed area on the fringe of the continental margin, including all natural extensions of its coastal territories outside its territorial sea.
