The successful implantation of blastocysts, the maintenance of pregnancy, and the initiation of childbirth are considered to depend on the timely regulation of the inflammatory response to a panel of foreign antigens. Cachectin-tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) is a cytokine that is involved in tissue remodeling as a local inflammatory mediator. Local TNF-α produced by decidua may be the center of regulation of uterine inflammatory response and reproductive success.
