在号称九省通衢的湖北,人们耳熟能详的除了江城武汉、三峡、武当山等名胜外,还能随口说出东风和神龙汽车公司的名字。东风和神龙汽车公司迁址武汉经济开发区的消息,曾在全国引起了不大不小的波澜。迁址的原因是公司地处鄂西北群山包围之中的十堰市,因交通条件有限,限制了公司的发展。汽车产业把山中小镇十堰,发展成为现代化的汽车城,如果没有了汽车城,十堰就等于“一无所有”。汽车城的存在与否,不仅对十堰至关重要,对鄂西北山区的发展同样至关重要,同时西部开发银武大通道也将经过此地。从国家西部大开发和鄂西北经济发展的大局考虑,在京珠高速公路湖北省段尚未通车时,湖北省即决定先期建设襄十高速公路,为鄂西北打开一条“黄金通道”。
