The process of the transition from steam locomotive to diesel locomotive in the United States is briefly described. The reactions of locomotive manufacturers and railways in the United States at the initial stage of the development of diesel locomotives are briefly described. Discusses the continuing development problems faced by EMD and GE in introducing the 6000 horsepower diesel locomotive adopting various new technologies in the fierce competition of diesel locomotive manufacturing: Is it the development of electrification or fuel cell to look for the substitute of diesel locomotive? Or to change the traditional use of diesel locomotives, the development of liquefied natural gas, flywheel energy storage, high and low pressure injection dual-fuel diesel locomotive? The problem depends on the railway investment in the development of new locomotives.
