In September 1987, Amtrak ordered two AC drive diesel locomotives from GM’s Electric Power Division (EMD). This is the first order from a GM company in Detroit, the United States, and Siemens AG in Munich, West Germany, to sign an agreement to develop and manufacture electric drive diesel locomotives. Siemens will supply AC drive components and hoad-end power inverters (HEPs) for buses. Traction system pit includes a 3000HP (1HP = 0.746kW) 12-cylinder diesel engine 12-710G3 produced by EMD, a synchronous Wenyi generator with integrated rectifier directly connected with a diesel engine, two traction inverters HEP inverter storage capacity provided) and 4 traction motors.
