Professor Bourgoignie, director of the Florida Nephrology Center, has observed that hyperparathyroidism is common in chronic hemodialysis patients because of poor calcium absorption and vitamin D deficiency. Increase in the dialysate calcium concentration, and to take measures to inhibit the intestinal absorption of phosphate, can reduce hyperparathyroidism. However, all previous patients who had been on dialysis for more than 8 years had their parathyroid glands removed. He recently found that oral cimetidine effectively controls parathyroid hormone in the blood circulation, a “chemical parathyroidectomy.”
