In mid-November 2002, the first case of atypical pneumonia with unknown etiology and high infectious lethality was discovered in Guangdong Province, China. In the second half of February 2003, the United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) named this severe SARS as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The incidence of SARS peaked from February to April 2003, and there was a global epidemic trend.
