The Ministry of Food Production, Land and Ocean Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago (MEPLMA) will identify cassava as one of its staples through the 2012-2015 food safety program and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture in Colombia will also be involved plan. The goal of this action plan is to raise the production of cassava from 5454 tons to 18182 tons. The International Center for Tropical Agriculture has been successfully cultivating cassava varieties using traditional and organizational culture. Once deployed in Trinidad and Tobago or elsewhere, this technology is set to increase cassava production and is therefore considered as a viable source of sustainable development. It will also promote the rapid propagation of cassava disease-free cultivars. Dr. Rouse-miller, who heads the program, has proposed the need to change the way farmers grow in Trinidad and Tobago.
