Researchers at Battle Northwest Pacific Laboratory are planning a controlled deposition study of diamond-like carbon films. This technology can be used as a protective coating on optical fibers and high-energy laser mirrors and as a wear-resistant film on lenses. The first task of the program is to examine the various factors that affect the performance of the film. The results obtained by the current deposition method are unpredictable and the performance of the film is inconsistent. In this study, researchers will use a highly controlled system to measure the effects of various factors. Such as the determination of pressure and substrate temperature on the film hydrogen concentration and film physical and mechanical properties.
