In 1981, Ronald Reagan was assassinated(行刺,暗杀). After a long time’s unconsciousness(失去知觉,不醒人事),he opened his eyes and found that Nancy(里根总统夫人)was at the bed. He smiled at her and said with a feeble(微弱的)voice,“Darling, I forgot to duck(低头躲避).”

A smart society woman was sitting next to President Coolidge(美国第十三任总统)at a party.
“Oh, Mr President,”she said smilingly,“You are so silent. I made a bet(打赌)today that I could get more than two words of you.”
“You lose,”the President replied.

A man came upon Lincoln blacking(擦黑鞋油)his boots in the basement(地下室)of the White House. He expressed astonishment(惊奇)that the President of the United States should be at such a menial(仆人的)task.
“What!Mr President,”he exclaimed, “are you blacking your own boots?”
“Whose else should I be blacking?”came Lincoln’s reply.

President Lincoln once dropped a few kind words about the confederates(同盟者). A woman flashed forth a question of how he could speak kindly of his enemy when he should rather destroy(消灭,破坏)them.
“What, Madam, do I not destroy them when I make them my friends?”Lincoln said.

As William Dean Howells and Mark Twain were coming out of church one morning, it began to rain heavily.
“Do you think it will stop?”asked Howells.
“It always has,”answered Twain.

O. Henry occasionally(偶尔)ate in a restaurant that was asked why he selected this particular restaurant, he replied:“Because it works two ways:most of the times the food was so bad that I can even stand the music, and the music was so bad that I can stand the food.”
