Over the past five years, the global economic crisis that swept through the developed western countries has caused a great deal of unemployment. Although the jobs and income of people in developed countries are at risk of being indeterminate, no one has predicted the overwhelming social turmoil in these countries during the Great Depression of the late 1920s. Why? One of the most important differences is that at that time people had to rely on relatives and friends, family support, or relief to survive after losing their jobs. Now, a system of unemployment insurance and social assistance provides for the unemployed
