A multinational team found that itraconazole can prevent the recurrence of pityriasis versicolor. Based on open treatment, the researchers conducted a randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled study of consecutive patients in the multinational clinic. A total of 238 patients received open treatment, 209 received prophylactic treatment, 106 received itraconazole and 103 received placebo. All patients undergoing open treatment received itraconazole 200 mg once daily for 7 days. Patients in the prophylaxis group took 200 mg of itraconazole or placebo twice daily for a month for a total of 6 months.
