由于整个现代科学技术的发展,火成岩石学在理论和技术方面都正在发生着深刻的变革.美国火成岩石学的发展,在世界上居于领先的地位,特别在进入八十年代前后(近四、五年来),其发展速度大大超过以往,被称为美国火成岩石学发展史上“最蓬勃兴旺的时期”(James,1983).美国现代火成岩石学发展的主要特点是:各种分析测试手段、实验技术和信息处理的现代化;火成岩物理化学(特别是热力学)日趋成熟,并成为火成岩石学坚实的理论基础;火成岩石学同天体地质学、地球物理学和大地构造学越来越紧密地结合,许多重大基本理论问题取得新的进展和突破,一些新的研究领域(如岩浆物理、岩浆作用中的化学动力学等)得到重视和发展;理论解释的定量化、模式化,等等.
