Describes two electrode designs that can produce high output energy densities by pulsed atmospheric CO_2-N_2-He lasers. In both cases a uniform body excitation was obtained with the aid of an auxiliary discharge. The first system utilizes a mesh cathode. 4.8 joules (6 joules.l -1) were generated from an excitation volume of 800 cm -3. The second system utilizes a solid cathode, producing 2 Joules (18 Joules.l -1) of excitation volume of 110 cm -3. The results of the research on the parameters of stereo cathode system are given. The output pulse energy, peak power, and pulse waveform as a function of the storage capacitor value, charging voltage, and gas composition were studied. It has been observed that some of the effects of self-mode-locking and single mode operation on pulse width.
