In the book, “William Morris to Gropius,” by Pewsner, Morris was defined as the starting point for the development of modern architecture, a perspective that has far-reaching implications and was largely historical Cited by the book. However, this historical explanation is flawed in that Morris actually runs counter to the modern architecture in many crucial respects, which has led to an extremely tortuous twist to the origins of modern architecture. This article will discuss Morris 'area of conflict with modern architecture and point out that the antithesis of Morris' theory, utilitarianism, is more in line with the main position of modern architecture. Based on a detailed discussion of the similarities and internal relations between utilitarianism and modern architectural thought, this article tries to clarify that it is reasonable and necessary to clarify the utilitarianism into the historical interpretation of the origin of modern architecture.
