在选矿厂生产实践中常常由于金属物体(主要是采矿场里混入矿石中的钎子头、钎子杆、深孔鑽机鑽头,运输设备零件等)落入碎矿机内而引起停车事故,有时会造成碎矿机断轴,严重的影响选矿厂的正常生产,造成巨大的经济损失;例如寿王坟铜矿在1958年因此类事故断轴三根损失达28万元(停车损失未计算在内),根据南芬铁矿选矿厂1959年1~7月统计,共断大轴18根,噎铁97次,少处理矿石四万多吨。目前国内外已有非磁性矿物金属探测器都不能应用于具有磁性矿物的选矿厂中,因为当磁性矿物通过时和铁质金属物体一样会使仪器动作,无法把矿石和金属物体区别开来。
