The British, French Channel Tunnel, one of the most magnificent works of this century, fought for eight years and cost ten billion pounds (154 billion U.S. dollars). It was finally opened on May 6, 1994. Under the co-sponsorship of Queen Elizabeth and France Mitterrand, the passenger and freight trains running through the tunnels started to operate. After that, the “Euro-Star” high-speed trains from London to Paris and Brussels and the cargo trains coherent across Europe were launched. With the opening operation, the equipment and management of the tunnel will be gradually improved; the number of pairs will also increase, and the transportation capacity will have to be expanded. The commissioning of this huge project not only gave a strong impetus to the economic and social development in Europe, but also advanced design, innovative technologies and original management methods.
