美国著名战地记者爱泼斯坦,60年前亲眼目睹了日本侵略者数十万军队围攻常德,战后常德一片废墟和遍地尸体的惨烈场面。当时在发至美国的电报稿《常德之战》中他沉痛地写道:“这次战争确为近两年来中国战事最烈的一次,记者也曾见过许多中国战局,如上海、台儿庄,其蹂躏状况亦不足与此相比”。常德保卫战,是中华民族反击外来侵略最英勇、最顽强、最惨烈的一场战役,它展现了中华民族大无畏的英勇气概和中华儿女崇高的爱国主义精神,是民族战争的光辉典范。
