语言的传授和学习方式也随着时代的变迁而变化。由传统的机械性的教与学到今天的重视语言习得的自然化及其无意识性习得,传统的重视语法教学理论受到了极大的冲击与挑战。现代化的外语教学理论更强调语言的功能性,交际性,强调要让学生在尽可能的接近所学语言的母语环境中较为轻松自如地掌握一门外语。这种指导思想的演变和发展,或多或少是受到了语言学中的一支重要流派——心灵主义者或唯理主义者的影响。在外语教学上更倾向于听说教学法。
Language teaching and learning styles also change with the changing times.
