The distribution of dry weight in boll shells, seeds and fibers was studied throughout 1979 and 1980 throughout the boll development at a flowering date. Since many previous experiments on the mode of fiber development encountered a large environmental error, we conducted a test with four different types of cotton to determine the distribution of dry weight to boll components at different years. The temperature and humidity in these two years are quite different. In 1980, it was hot and dry. With the difference of climate in the past two years, the distribution of dry weight and the development of cotton bolls vary greatly. Compared to 1979, only 88% of the time was ripe for cotton in 1980, with a 25% reduction in dry weight per bell and a 19% reduction in trunk dry weight per bell (17% may be incorrect) Dry weight per bell decreased by 41%. In addition, bolls developed in 1980 were smaller in number per seed, but larger in size than in 1979, with fewer but more coarse fibers. The total lint output in 1980 was only 7% lower than in 1979, so the bell in 1980 was larger. For a bell, the difference in years has the greatest effect on the dry weight of the fiber. The effect of dry weight per boll fiber suggests that fiber development is susceptible to environmental variability.
