图书包括书籍、画册、图片等出版物。是超越时空传播知识、科技、艺术、积累文化的重要工具。它可以促进社会发展和人类文明。 在社会主义市场经济条件下,图书的价值是通过市场实现的,图书进入市场即为商品,就要参与竞争,追求最大利润是市场经济的根本法则。因此,在市场竞争中出版社的追求则是以最低的投入,生产出尽可能多的优质图书,以满足人民群众日益增长的精神文化需求,并从中获取最大利润,这就是图书的经济效益。获取经济效益是在社会主义市场经济条件下,作为自负盈亏、自主经营的出版社生存、发展的需要。这与一般企业没有什么太多的不同。但是图书又不同于一般的纯物质性商品,它是物化的精神产品,是一种特殊商品。它特殊在可以影响人们的人生观、价值观、思想修养、文化品格等。高品位、高境界、高文化含量的图书,可使人净化心灵、精神高尚、增长知识、学业有成,从而促进科技进步、经济发展、社会文明。格调低下、内容庸俗、质量伪劣的图书会使青少年及意志薄弱的读者思想空虚、行为卑俗、不学无术,从而贻误一代甚至几代人。图书对读者、社会所产生的这种作用就是它的社会效益。

High-grade, high-level, high-content books, can purify the soul, noble spirit, knowledge growth, academic success, so as to promote scientific and technological progress, economic development, social civilization. Low-profile, vulgar-looking, poor-quality books can deprive youngsters and weak-minded readers of their emptiness, behavior, and ignorance, thereby undermining one generation or even generations. Book to the reader, society, this effect is generated by its social benefits.
