《后汉书·张衡传》记载了张衡所造的候风地动仪。《北师大学报》今年第2期登载钱文辉文章,对“饰以篆文山龟鸟兽之形”作了解释。钱文先指出用“山龟鸟兽之形”来装饰,和《周易》有关。《周易》曰:“在天成象,在地成形。”朱善注曰:“象者,日月星辰之属;形者,山川动植之属。”“山龟鸟兽之形”与“地”有关。候风地动仪作为地震仪器,在外面装饰山龟鸟兽的图象,是很自然的事.
