西宁自然库是利用青海高原冷凉干燥的自然气候条件来贮藏作物种质资源的中期库,库内年均温度8.8℃,平均相对湿度57％。据对多种作物(小麦、玉米、豌豆、水稻、大麦、蚕豆、大豆、油菜、谷子和棉花)种质资源多年贮藏后的抽样检测表明,其发芽率大多数仍能保持较高水平,其中贮入30年的小麦,仍有一定的发芽能力,平均发芽率为33％(5.56％—46.0％);贮入13—16年的豌豆,平均发芽率为78.4％(59.4％—97.6％);贮入17年的油菜,平均发芽率为92.2％(85％—98％);贮入12年的谷子,平均发芽率为72.38％(34％—94.4％);贮入21年的皮大麦和裸大麦(青稞),平均发芽率分别为94.0％(91％—98％)和93.0％(90.0％—98.0％);贮入10年的蚕豆,平均发芽率为81.25％(75％—85％),故西宁自然库对多种作物种质资源的保存效果是比较理想的。
