Orthodontic tooth movement is a multifactorial periodontal tissue remodeling under mechanical stress. With the development of modern experimental techniques, researchers began to study the biological characteristics of orthodontic tooth movement at the molecular and genetic levels. Among various cytokines involved in periodontal remodeling, growth factor is one of the important regulators. To understand its specific mechanism of periodontal tissue remodeling in the process of orthodontic tooth movement is helpful for orthodontists to better understand the biological behavior of orthodontic tooth movement and guide its clinical application in orthodontics. This review summarizes the biological basis of orthodontic tooth movement, the changes of periodontal tissue during orthodontic tooth movement and the role of growth factors in periodontal tissue remodeling.
