Objective To investigate the relationship between glutathione Stransferase (GST) gene deletion and age-related cataract formation. Methods GSTM1 gene was detected in 77 elderly cataract patients and 76 healthy controls using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). GSTM1 gene was detected in 22 elderly patients with cataractous lens epithelial cells. Results The incidence of GSTM1 gene deficiency was 53.25% in cataract patients and 46.05% in controls. There was no significant difference between the two groups (χ2 = 0.750, P> 0.05, OR = 0.75). The detection of GSTM1 gene in 20 senile cataractous lens epithelial cells was consistent with that of peripheral blood cells (P <0.01). Conclusion There is no significant relationship between GSTM1 gene deletion and senile cataract.
