A so-called “Super” controllable wheel creep device has been applied to GM’s electric drivetrain since 1978. This device enables the locomotives to increase the effective adhesion of the line while reducing the amount of sand used. This article includes a summary of GM’s Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services (EMD) adhesion studies and the basic concepts of a “super” wheel control system. The article also introduces the heavy axle and light axle heavy truck sand and wheel wear research and performance test results. It also includes the test results of the Type 59 locomotive being used on the British Rail.
