我县生米乡位于赣江西岸的丘陵地区,历来就有栽培薤头的习惯,但只是自给自足的小农生产方式,面积较小,产量也不高,未能形成商品生产。直至1978年南昌罐头厂收购加工制罐头,薤头生产才开始逐渐转变为商品生产。随着薤头商品流通渠道的扩大,外商也开始对生米薤头感兴趣,华裔加拿大食品研究所王乐同教授曾到生米乡进行了考察。生米薤头个大、色白、鲜嫩多汁、肉厚清脆、味美爽口。制品远销加拿大、美国和港澳市场,深受欢迎。
